What is the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program?
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is a specialized program in high school that allows you to explore apprenticeship and consider careers in the skilled trades, generally starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the cooperative education program.
Ways in which you can participate in this program:
- become an OYAP participant;
- become an OYAP participant and register as an apprentice while in the program;
- become an OYAP participant, register as an apprentice, and complete your level 1 through a dual credit program.

JUMP START YOUR CAREER
You can jump start your career by accumulating co-op (OYAP) hours and counting them towards your apprenticeship! You can even jump start your college education by completing your level 1.

Hands-on learning activates more parts of your brain and is great for retention. The apprenticeship pathway combines in-class and on-the-job training opportunities to maximize learning and skill development.

STEP 1: Requirements
Meet the requirements: 15 years old, 14 credits, full-time or part-time in a secondary school
Step 2: Participation
Take a co-op course in an apprenticeship trade and become an OYAP participant
Step 3: Interest
Confirm your interest in pursuing the trades and starting an apprenticeship
Step 4: Employer
Discuss with the employer, the possibility of registering as an apprentice
Step 5: Confirmation
If the employer accepts, your co-op teacher will need to confirm that the employer qualifies as a sponsor
Step 6: Signature
Sign the OYAP Participant Application Form – Section 2
Step 7: Level 1 Options
